colgate lake

Have you ever come across a place so peaceful it instantly feels like home? I have many times, but yesterday it was on a late summer afternoon in the Catskills at a little spot called Colgate Lake. The whole afternoon felt a bit like a dream. The temperature was 72 degrees and sunny.  There was a light breeze blowing and the water was refreshing but still somewhat warm. And best of all, there were only about 11 people at the lake the whole afternoon which made it an ideal place to relax, swim and picnic. Henry was napping when we arrived, so I used that time for an open water swim across the lake. It felt amazing! Afterward we had a picnic in the middle of the meadow while soaking up the sun and taking in the scent of wildflowers such as goldenrod and aster. When Henry woke up, he was overjoyed with the sights around him! We spent our remaining hour chasing fish, throwing pebbles, making new friends and wading in the shallow area by shoreline. I was so happy that Henry seemed as at ease in this new place as I was.  I look forward to bringing my little boy back to this tiny slice of heaven for many summers to come.
