I have an ability to see an image of a place and remember small details from it indefinitely. Such was the case with Blithewood whose gardens I saw featured during a video special about 15 years ago. I told myself that one day I would visit this beautiful garden along the Hudson during the fall and stroll under its wisteria covered pergolas.
Imagine my surprise when moved to New York last year and I was able to begin a search for this beautiful place from my dreams (which I could not remember the name of, but could picture so vividly)! Eventually, Instagram searches helped me find Blithewood- which is located on the campus of Bard College in Red Hook, NY.
Blithewood is the home of the Levy Economics Institute of Economics. The expansive lawn has sweeping views of the Hudson and features a formal Italianate walled garden.
I have a passion for landscape architecture, so we took this roadtrip only to explore Bithewood, but Bard College has a beautiful campus with several other gardens, the Hessel Museum of Art and an eclectic mix of modern and historic architecture.
It's definitely worth including on a trip to the Hudson River Valley, especially if you are planning to visit Hudson, Hyde Park or Kingston.
It was a bit of a journey to get here, but as soon as we stepped out of our cars with umbrellas and jackets on a misty October afternoon, I felt such joy taking in the beauty surrounding us. And those magical pergolas? They were everything I imagined.
